What to Write

The LANA Board requests that any persons whose ancestry came from within the boundaries of modern Laos, to please write in your ethnicity as below:

On the Census questionnaire form, person 1, under number 9, please

  • Check off: OTHER ASIAN
  • Then write in: LAOTIAN

Please note: LAOTIAN instead of LAO because of the way we have been categorized in the US American population category. LAOTIAN and HMONG are the only two official categories of Laotians recognized by the US Census.

To all persons whose orgins are from Laos, please write in LAOTIAN to benefit the entire community including all ethnic groups.

  • Then check off: OTHER RACE
  • Then write in:
    LUM or
    TAIDAM or
    KHMU or
    LUE or
    LUM TRINIDADIAN or
    HMONG or
  • ISSAN THAI or
    ISSAN

*From person 2 to person 7, under number 6, please:

  • Check off: OTHER ASIAN
  • Then write in: LAOTIAN

    LUM or
    TAIDAM or

  • *From person 7 through 12, please write in per directions: last name, first name, sex, age on April 1, 2010, date of birth, and relation to person 1 (yes/no).

    The information collected by Census is to count persons. The information will be used for studies to best assess needs in the growing population with effects on the number of representatives in the US house of representatives to where schools need to be built. The personal data (names, dates of birth) will be maintained confidential and placed in historical database for 72 years. All persons are counted regardless of the immigration status, age or sex.

    If you think you have not been counted, please let us know as we are considering this issue a human rights issue in accordance to our membership with the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans.
